Indocin is a medicine taken by people to relieve swelling, pain and joint stiffness caused by such conditions as bursitis, gout, arthritis and tendonitis. This is what helps them do normal everyday activities. It belongs to a group of drugs called NSAIDs, and it can be taken to relieve pain resulted from inflammation of a pouch.

Basic Guidelines on Its Correct Intake

It’s necessary to use Indocin by mouth according to the directions given by doctors. Usually, patients take it 1 or 2 times a day with enough water, and they shouldn’t lie down for about ten minutes after taking this medication. It’s advisable to take Indocin with food, with effective antacids or right after your meals to prevent stomach ulcers. Your everyday dosage is prescribed by doctors based on your individual tolerance and other important factors. Adult patients can’t take more than 200 mg on a daily basis. For children, their regular doses are prescribed based on their body weight, and their maximum dosage is 150-200 mg per day. Sometimes, it may take about 1 month to notice full benefits of this treatment. If you take Indocin when needed, take your initial dose right after the first signs of pain to get the most out of this treatment.

List of Common and Rare Side Effects

Some of the most common adverse effects caused by Indocin include drowsiness, heartburn, dizziness, upset stomach, headaches and others. You need to call your physician once any of them persist, but most patients don’t develop any unpleasant signs at all. Go to the hospital if you notice any of the following serious signs:

          Important Indocin Precautions

Before you use this medication, you should visit qualified doctors and discuss any pre-existing conditions that you have. For example, inform them if you have any possible allergic reactions to drugs, asthma, clotting or bleeding problems, nasal polyps, heart diseases, hypertension, stomach and liver issues and others. Older patients and children are more prone to developing unwanted side effects, especially dehydration. The intake of Indocin can make you feel drowsy or dizzy, so that you shouldn’t drive or perform other activities that require your complete alertness, because it’s dangerous.

Besides, this medication may lead to stomach bleeding, especially if you smoke or drink on a daily basis. It also makes some patients more sensitive to direct sun exposure, so it should be avoided. Pregnant and nursing women are allowed to take Indocin only when it’s clearly needed. All users should avoid combining it with certain medications, such as corticosteroids, because of risky drug interactions.
