          Description

          Nowadays, Hydrochlorothiazide is taken by patients to treat high blood pressure as its use helps them prevent such serious health conditions as kidney complications, strokes and heart failures. This medication belongs to a group of drugs called diuretics or water pills, and it works by forcing the human body to make more urine.

          This is what helps users to get rid of extra water and salt, thus, reducing edema and lessening such unwanted symptoms as swelling and shortness of breath. It’s necessary to take Hydrochlorothiazide orally, usually once a day (in the morning, both with and without food). You should avoid taking your regular doses before bedtime because you may have to get up at night to urinate. The right dosage is always based on your individual response and other basic factors.

          List of Rare and Common Side Effects

          There are certain symptoms caused by the use of Hydrochlorothiazide in rare cases. For instance, some patients may experience:

          bullet_ball_blue Dizziness and headaches;
          bullet_ball_blue Upset stomach and lightheadedness.

          These signs are mild and rare, and if you want to prevent lightheadedness and dizziness, you shouldn’t get up fast from any sitting and lying position. If you notice the following severe side effects, go to the hospital at once:

          bullet_ball_blue Eye pain and vision changes;
          bullet_ball_blue Serious dehydration and allergic reactions;
          bullet_ball_blue Muscle weakness and cramps;
          bullet_ball_blue Irregular, fast or slow heartbeats;
          bullet_ball_blue Unusual thirst or dry mouth;
          bullet_ball_blue Reduced urination and others.

          Basic Precautions and Other Contraindications

          Before you start using Hydrochlorothiazide, visit your doctor and discuss possible contraindications. Your physician should know whether you have any possible allergies and other pre-existing medical conditions, including kidney and liver complications, lupus, gout, diabetes and others. This treatment may make you feel dizzy, so you shouldn’t drive or perform other tasks that require your full alertness to be on a safe side. You also need to limit the consumption of alcohol because of increased side effects. Such symptoms as vomiting, severe sweating and diarrhea may increase your risk of having dehydration, so you need to call your doctor when they start. If you have diabetes, the intake of Hydrochlorothiazide may affect blood sugar levels, so they must be monitored on a regular basis. This medicine may reduce people’s potassium levels too and make them more sensitive to the sun. Older adults are prone to be sensitive to its side effects, while nursing and pregnant women should be careful when taking Hydrochlorothiazide.

          In addition, there are certain medications that should be avoided when undergoing this treatment because of possible drug interactions. Ensure that you don’t combine Hydrochlorothiazide with colestipol, cholestyramine, some NSAIDs, lithium, cisapride and others. They may change the way it works and result in increased side effects, so show their list to your doctor.
